The city of Leeds has a large number of pubs but a relatively small number which can be described as either historic or untouched. Preservation of the interior of pubs is very much part of the campaigning which is done locally in Leeds and fits in with the national agenda of caring for the heritage of our pubs.

National Inventory

The National Inventory (NI) identifies the country's best preserved historic pub interiors which are graded in three tiers (Three, Two and One Star) all are considered to be of special national interest. Local Inventory

Sitting below the NI is the Local Inventory (LI) which recognises the pubs of Leeds, which again are at least fifty years old, where the level of change of the pub interior is too great for them to be included on the NI. However all these pub retain parts of their traditional plan form and / or some historic features. Such fragments are of heritage interest and deserve recognition and respect in any alteration or refurbishment schemes that may be proposed.

Some of the pubs are included because they retain much of their original exterior despite their interior having had substantial change. Please note some of these pubs are currently closed, some long term, which shows the precarious nature of our heritage.
